A look at First-Year Student Success in the Bachelor of Arts

Atmospheric Scientist Dr. Dominique Bourdin presents her findings on student academic success and sense of belonging in the first-year Bachelor of Arts cohort, using census data from 2023 to assess retention rates from first to second year. She observed that struggling Arts students may “bounce back” and see significant improvements in academic performance even if they struggled prior to entering post-secondary education, and that intervention may be as simple as raising awareness for student services such as the Writing Centre.
